Tom Luther is an artist working primarily in the world of sound. His formative training was as a pianist primarily in the Western European Classical tradition. As a student at the Hartt School of Music he began studying improvisation, computer music, and modern compositional methods. Since graduation he has had an eclectic experience performing in and composing for contemporary chamber ensembles, jazz groups, and bar bands.

His creative output features a balance of extended approaches including conventional composition, improvisation, algorithm, interaction, and sonic narratives. He realizes his work in live performance, video presentations, installations, and theater sound design.

His current projects include:

"Meditations on Perihelion", an immersive multi-sensory live performance of original electronic music and full-dome planetarium video.

• A solo electronic performance collection that explores improvisation through melodic andsonic narratives using interactive and generative computer programs.

• Live performance of new silent film scores

• Sound design for the Maddy's Theater production of "Three Little Kittens"

His recorded output is available through Amazon, iTunes, and Bandcamp. It includes original jazz works as well as electronic and electro-acoustic recordings. His most recent, “Finding the Boxmaker” (2019) was featured on the NPR syndicated program “Music From the Hearts of Space.” “Necessity” (2015) received an enthusiatic review in DownEast Magazine. He has performed in many small and mid-sized venues from Portland to Bangor, including theFrontier, Blue, Nocturnem and the Camden Opera House.

Tom teaches piano, composition, and digital music at Midcoast Music Academy inRockport, Maine. He has also taught seminars at Hope Elementary, Sweet Tree Arts, and Camden Hills Regional High School.
